Chicago Cubs Hold First Spring Training Workouts

The Chicago Cubs hold their first official workout for pitchers and catchers today.

The team begins Spring Training in Mesa, Arizona after a disappointing finish last year.

Lester Munson is a senior writer for ESPN and ESPN.com. He says most sports writers are predicting a second or third place finish for the Cubs. But he’s more optimistic about the North Siders’ chances.

MUNSON: I think that we’re going to be okay. I like Marlon Byrd. I think Carlos Silva, the new pitcher, may come through for us in a surprising way. So I am optimistic. I think the Cubs can win the division if they have a couple of good years from Soto, Soriano, Silva and some of these guys.

Munson is predicting a better season from outfielder Alfonso Soriano. And he says he thinks pitcher Carlos Zambrano and former All-Star Geovany Soto will benefit from being in better shape this year.

Opening Day is April 5.
