A Naperville-native is favored to be the U.S.A’s best chance at winning an Olympic gold medal in men’s figure skating.

West suburban figure skating coach Candice Brown-Burek trained Evan Lysacek when he was just beginning his ice skating career. She says Lysacek’s informal title of being one of the hardest working skaters was true even as a teenager.

BROWN-Burek: He really had the makings of a champion from early on. And although there is no crystal ball to ever predict that far out, he surely had a lot of the right ingredients. He had the passion and the perseverance.

Brown-Burek predicts Lysacek will win a medal tonight. She hopes it’ll be gold. Lysacek is the reigning World Champion in men’s figure skating. He goes into tonight’s free skate competition just a fraction of a point behind Russia’s Evgeny Plushenko who holds the top spot after Tuesday’s short program.
