Daley Against Moratorium on School Closings

SHARE Daley Against Moratorium on School Closings

The Chicago City Council’s Committee on Education is considering a moratorium on school closings, today.

Mayor Richard Daley says he’s against the plan.

DALEY: It’s a difficult decision to close any school, but like anything else the quality of education always comes first and that is the key. And that’s what they always have to look. These are tough decisions, but tough decisions have to be made when you’re talking about a good quality education.

The resolution calls for just a one-year moratorium on closings, consolidations, phase-outs and turnarounds. Aldermen who sponsor the plan say a better strategy for improving education should be developed if there is a break in school closings. Chicago Board of Education officials are expected to appear before the committee.
