GM Cuts Hummer

General Motors decision to shut down the Hummer brand is bad news for a Northern Indiana community that’s already experiencing high unemployment.

Hummer H-1 is built in Mishawaka near South Bend by AM General.

GM announced Wednesday that it’s shutting down the Hummer brand after a deal to sell it to a Chinese company fell through.

Corey Jensen worked at AM General until he was laid off three years ago. He now worries what more layoffs could do the town.

JENSEN: It’s terrible for the economy, it hurts everything. Middle class people makes the world go round and when you take away middle class workers the world falls apart like it has.

With about a thousand workers, AM General is one of the region’s largest employers.
