Social media and public engagement

Throughout the George Zimmerman trial, verdict and beyond it, social media has served as a catalyst for activism in communities of every race. People across the country took to the streets in organized, non-violent protest almost immediately after the trial's verdict. This is an historic departure from the past, when the African American community would wait for cues from groups like the NAACP, Operation Push or coalitions of African American ministers. The “We are not Trayvon Martin” tumblr is one example of activism through social media. Creators Joseph Phelan and Tobias Packer discuss the blog that opens a discussion of white privilege.
