Inaugural Chicago Independent Bookstore Day this Saturday

Much like on Record Store Day nine independent bookstores in Chicago are hoping to see lines down the sidewalk when they open this Saturday (July 12). They’re teaming up to host the first-ever Chicago Independent Bookstore Day. They’ll offer free books, food tastings with cookbook authors and numerous other events. Bookstores of course are facing pressure these days, from online retailers, and changing reading habits. A January Pew poll found almost one-quarter of Americans had NOT read a book in the previous year. Joining us to talk about how bookstores are responding, and to chat about what unique role they play in their communities are Stefan Moorehead, manager of Unabridged Bookstore in Lakeview, and Lizzy Boden, assistant manager of Open Books downtown.
