Do you give to the homeless? Why or why not?

When you get off one of Chicago’s highways and see a panhandler with a sign asking for money at the end of the expressway ramp, do you roll down your window and put some change or a dollar into the cup? Or, do you avert your eyes and just try to stare straight ahead until the light changes? Here to help foster this discussion are two people with extensive experience working with the homeless here in Chicago. Jim Lobianco is the chief development officer for Chicago House, an organization that helps the LGBTQ community and people with HIV and AIDS. He recently stepped down as the head of Streetwise and ran Chicago’s department of Homeless Services for three and a half years. Also with us in studio is Julie Dworkin, director of policy at the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. Later, well be joined by 'Bud,' a formerly homeless individual who asked us not use his last name for this segment. Photo Courtesy of Flickr/ FRANCO FOLINI
