SHARE What happened in the police shooting of 17-year old Laquan McDonald?

It’s become a familiar narrative. A 17-year-old African-American boy, shot and killed on the Southwest Side of the city. His name was Laquan McDonald. Chicago police say he refused to drop his knife and tried to approach the officers. They shot him multiple times, at least once in the chest. This year Chicago’s Independent Police Review Authority reported nearly 40 police involved shootings in the first nine months. More than 80% of them involved African-Americans. As people in Chicago continue to protest the deaths of Eric Garner and Michael Brown - many are unaware of this young man, killed nearly two months ago on our own streets. Craig Futterman, founder of the Civil Rights and Police Accountability Project of the University of Chicago and independent writer Jamie Kalven are investigating the circumstances that led to Laquan’s death.
