The River Queen

SHARE The River Queen

On Monday, Chicago's harbors officially opened for the boating season.

That may have sent a tingle down the spine of Mary Morris.

Midwest waterways, particularly towns along the Mississippi, hold a special fascination for the author.

She's a Chicago native who's written more than a dozen books, including several accounts of her adventures traveling around the world.

Her latest is called The River Queen.

It's a memoir of her recent journey down an 800 mile stretch of the Mississippi.

She embarked on the trip a few years ago, shortly after the death of her father.

Morris recently talked with Chicago Public Radio's Dan Bindert.

She says her father's tales of life on the river drove her to make the trip.
