The American Colony Hotel in Jerusalem is an oasis for diplomats, high-ranking officials and journalists. It's famed for being “neutral ground,” where Jews, Christians, and Muslims meet despite the turbulent political situation outside its doors. But more than a century ago, the hotel was the site of a commune created by Chicago socialite and evangelist Anna Spafford. Spafford's journey from the American Midwest to the Middle East is the subject of the new book American Priestess: The Extraordinary Story of Anna Spafford and the American Colony on Jerusalem. Author Jane Fletcher Geniesse recently spoke with Alison Cuddy about the “proper young lady” who became the powerful leader of a cult-like movement.
