Painter in a Savage Land

SHARE Painter in a Savage Land

Since the advent of cameras and microphones, it's become routine to record the major discoveries and achievements of mankind. But 400-some years ago, at the height of the Age of Exploration, there were no video cameras; so it was left to artists to document the journey.

The story of one such artist is told in the book Painter in a Savage Land: The Strange Saga of the First European Artist in North America. Local author Miles Harvey tells Alison Cuddy that artist Jacque Le Moyne filled many roles while on one 16th century French expedition.
