Tonight, Senator Barack Obama will “take to the airwaves” for a 30-minute ad on prime time network TV. That kind of exposure takes big bucks—and indeed, Obama's got it to spare. He's raised more money in this campaign than all of the candidates combined in the 2000 race for President. And while McCain hasn't been quite so successful in bringing in the cash, he's moving up the spending a notch this week with an increased ad presence in battleground states like Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

For a closer look at all that cash—where it's coming from and where it's going, we turn to our campaign finance guru, Cindi Canary. She's the director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform.
