The Chicago Housing Authority is nearly 9 years into its 10-year “plan for transformation.” One of the core ideas of the plan is a concept known as “residential mobility.” The idea is to move the urban poor out of concentrated areas of poverty, and help them relocate to mixed-income areas. This presumably more stable environment will help lift people out of poverty into better economic circumstances. Chris Farrell is the co-producer of After the Projects, an American Radio Works documentary airing Sunday at 9 p.m. on Chicago Public Radio.

After the Projects looks at the Plan for Transformation, and how it's affecting people's lives. One of those people is Michael Whitehead, who's featured prominently in the documentary. Producer Chris Farrell says Michael illustrates all too well some of the struggles involved in moving on from the projects.
