Debating the Future of Education

Tuesday, October 17th at 5:30PM
Morningstar (22 W. Washington St., Chicago)

No matter where you live, education reform is a hot-button issue. Whether it’s funding charter schools, opening the system through the voucher program or focusing on strengthening the public schools that already exist, it’s a debate that inspires passion on all sides. Here, we’ll have representatives of each viewpoint discuss their respective merits and question the other concepts, allowing us to get a more nuanced view of what education reform could mean on both a local and national level. WBEZ's Kate Grossman will moderate this discussion.

The Fight for a Black Middle Class
Wednesday, October 18, 5:30pm
Morningstar, 22 W. Washington St., Chicago

For every dollar a white family has, a black family has a little over a nickel. With this harsh disparity in place, what does the black middle class look like and where does it fit in? In this collaborative program with the documentary, Against All Odds: A Fight for a Black Middle Class, we’ll sit down with filmmakers and stakeholders to explore the often heroic efforts of black families to pursue the American Dream in the face of unrelenting barriers. What does it mean to be middle class for black families in Chicago, and can the American Dream be redefined? WBEZ's Natalie Moore will moderate this discussion.
