The city that works needs places to play. Even before Chicago was a big city, its drinking establishments served as oases for the tired, thirsty and lonely alike.
Duck into the iconic Carol’s Pub on April 12 to learn more about Chicago’s taverns and how their presence has shaped the city’s neighborhoods and culture.
A few Curious City episodes have explored these beloved gathering places and how they came to be. We’ll look back on those stories through this event, bringing live storytelling, archival photos, audio and music together for a celebratory overview of Chicago bar history.
Curious City’s Jason Marck will chat with journalist Robert Loerzel as he shares how Uptown originally became a hot spot for entertainment — and what happened during Prohibition. We’ll also hear from Liz Garibay, executive director of the Chicago Brewseum about those iconic Old Style signs. The Hoyle Brothers will provide our tunes for the evening.
