WBEZ’s Podcast Passport Presents: NANCY

Date/Time
Saturday, December 2 @ 8:00pm – 9:30pm
Location
Athenaeum Theatre 2936 N Southport Ave. 60657 Chicago , IL

Hailed by Time as “[I]mpressive… [a show that] will make listeners both laugh out loud and tear up,” NANCY is WNYC Studios’ hit podcast covering “all things LGBTQ and beyond" placing people across the LGBTQ spectrum at the center of their own stories.

Co-hosts and BFFs Kathy Tu and Tobin Low are super queer, super fun and super ready to share provocative stories and frank conversations about the LGBTQ experience – and now you can catch them live in Chicago!

NANCY has brought listeners episodes on a range of topics, from unpacking what it means to be a gay Republican to a multigenerational conversation between an older and younger man about their HIV diagnoses to heated arguments over the burning question: is Dumbledore really gay? Most recently, its OUT at WORK project took the pulse of openness in the workplace at a time when states are inconsistent in their protections for LGBTQ people on the job.

The evening will feature several guests in conversation with Kathy and Tobin sharing their unique stories and the weird, funny, and poignant journeys we take to get there.

JUST ANNOUNCED: Hosts, Kathy and Tobin welcome Fatimah Asghar and Sam Bailey, co-creators of the Emmy-nominated, viral web series, Brown Girls, onstage!

Based in Chicago, Brown Girls, helps to normalize and increase the visibility of women of color, especially queer women of color with its loveably messy characters and relatable yet specific coming-of-age storylines. The night of its premiere, Brown Girls became the second most popular trending topic on Twitter, a testament to the strength and beauty of its story.

HBO recently announced a deal to develop Brown Girls into a series. Fatimah and Samantha will chat about their personal stories and experiences in Chicago and how that has influenced the series’ characters as well as the adventures and challenges of creating a female-centric portrait of the city.

STAY TUNED, more guests will be announced soon!

About the Hosts:

Prior to NANCY, Tobin Low was a producer on WNYC Studios’ More Perfect, the Radiolab spinoff about the Supreme Court. His work has also appeared on Marketplace, Studio 360, and the Codebreaker podcast. He is the recipient of a 2015 STEM-story grant from PRX, and was a New Voices Scholar at the 2014 Third Coast Festival Conference. Tobin was once a professional cellist, and attended circus camp as a child. Go figure.

Kathy Tu heads up NANCY’s west coast operations – aka her home in Los Angeles. Prior to NANCY, Kathy did production work for a number of podcasts, including The Memory Palace, The Mortified Podcast, and Masterpiece Studio. She wants it noted that this whole hosting thing makes her very uncomfortable, but she's leaning the eff in.
