Downtown Chicago Is Quiet … So Far

Chicago’s downtown was mostly quiet this evening as the polls closed and as construction workers continued to put up boards on windows of the Peninsula Hotel to protect against possible unrest related to the election.

Carla Perfomo said seeing the boards go up made it look like Armageddon. She works as a nanny nearby. She said if things get really bad she will not be coming to work for a number of days.

“I am very worried,” she said. “I am praying for the best. I think the looting would be unfair to the city and to us. Whatever the outcome is, God bless us all.”

Many other businesses have boarded up windows preparing for unrest though downtown residents were walking dogs, finishing up shopping and getting carry-out in the early evening.

The area near Trump Tower was also quiet. One police officer who was guarding the street near the president’s namesake hotel said he expects unrest later in the evening. The bridge over the Chicago River Leading to the Trump Tower was up, and all the streets around it were closed off.

At Federal Plaza in the Loop, a small group associated with an anti-fascism group set up folding chairs and a speaker. They were planning to watch the results outside.
