Live Updates: Chicago Protests and Unrest

Chicago police are on pace for the most arrests in a single week since the city’s inspector general started tracking arrest data in 2017.

City data show officers made more than 1,400 arrests between Sunday and Wednesday, in the midst of protests against police violence, and widespread vandalism and looting. Officers made more than 700 arrests on Sunday, by far the most in a single day in the last three-and-a-half years.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said officers made 465 arrests for disorderly conduct on Sunday. Compare that to 67 disorderly conduct arrests on Tuesday, a sign things could be slowing down.

Arrests had been way down in Chicago since March, as department officials instructed officers to avoid making arrests when possible to protect against the spread of COVID-19. Those numbers had started to creep up last month but exploded in the past few days.
