How Pie Became An American Icon

SHARE How Pie Became An American Icon

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and planning that menu is probably your top priority. Now, you’ve got the 15-pound turkey, your mom’s famous stuffing recipe, and the extra butter for the mashed potatoes… but did you remember dessert?

Whether you’re Team Sweet Potato or Team Pumpkin (or a true maverick who skips the debate for a slice of pecan pie), one thing most people can agree on: Thanksgiving is just that much sweeter with a piece of pie. How did this dessert become a holiday favorite and an American icon?

Morning Shift talks all things pie with a couple of local experts on the subject: Linda Hoskins, executive director of the American Pie Council, a national organization located here in Lake Forest, and Paula Haney, the owner of Hoosier Mama Pie Shop. We also open the phones for listeners to ask their last-minute baking questions and to hear about their favorite pie around the holidays.
