I just got back from Gov. Blagojevich’s press conference at the Thompson center. I’d heard the rumor that Blago would be appointing Roland Burris to Obama’s vacant U.S. Senate seat before I got there, so that wasn’t much of a surprise. What was a surprise was when Burris noticed Congressman Bobby Rush in the crowd halfway through the Q & A. I was especially surprised to find that Rush was standing next to me in the crowd of photographers. It seemed like quite a coincidence- until Congressman Rush took to the podium and launched into a defense of Burris’ appointment on the basis of there being no current U.S. Senator of African American decent. To me it seemed prearranged, the only question being if Rush was supposed to be late?
