Top story: Several school districts are taking drastic measures to fill astounding budget holes. Schools are warning of teacher layoffs. This nugget from the Trib: Maine Township High School District 207 in Park Ridge has approved the elimination of 75 teaching and 62 nonteaching jobs. All this because the state of Illinois isn’t paying its bills. The school problems come on the heels of CTA layoffs and service cuts. I have a feeling that we are going to see much more of this in the coming months as budget cycles finish. Is the IL state government working on this? Mayor Daley and Senate President John Cullerton say we should tax. So does Governor Quinn. Are there any other plans? Is it just a question of how much tax? What do the GOP leaders see as the fix? I’m ready to go with whomever has a plan. Any plan. In situations like this, I always ask myself: WWTRD? What would Tom Roeser do? My guess is he’d write a snarky blog post about me and then take a nap while watching Glenn Beck. B story: Today, the Sound Opinions episode featuring Rivers Cuomo is featured on iTunes as one of the podcasts of the day! This is the episode where Cuomo plays Weezer songs with a local cover band. (Ed. note- the Cathy Santonies were only a cover band for this show. They usually play originals. Not that there’s anything wrong with being a cover band.) C story: Dumke is at it again! His new story: How open is an “open” council meeting. Weather: I have nothing to say about the weather. Every day I struggle to find something to write. I am just not inclined to this coverage. So instead of forcing every day, why don’t I just give you tomorrow’s weather forecast. That seems useful? Tomorrow it will be: 35 and maybe snow. Sports: It’s great to have baseball season here, isn’t it? And it’s a really great thing to have two baseball teams with such great, colorful managers. Guillen and Piniella are so much fun to watch in press conferences, in the dugout and on live TV. Piniella was hilarious on Channel 9 Sunday night during a live interview with Dan Roan. Instead of going with the standard sound-bite interview, Piniella wound up and slowly delivered information about the Cubs. So much so that I think Roan got 3 questions in while trying to move Lou along. And Ozzie? Come on - this guy is probably the most entertaining personality in baseball, period. Players, managers, general managers, owners - nobody beats Ozzie. In a town where Lovie and Vinny kill you with lame quotes and lamer personalities, it’s refreshing to have these two coaches. Kicker: No kicker today, just an in-house announcement. Remember when we had a ton of fun on election night with our live-chat show? We did a chat-room with analysts. We busted our hump to get politicians and really had a great night.‚ With that momentum, we’ve decided to do it regularly. Why not? Like a live (text only) talk show for the blog. We will have some cool people from Chicago’s new media scene joining in and we’ll book real guests to talk to. Maybe it’s about the news of the day, or maybe it’s just getting someone famous to type with us for an hour.‚ Best part? It’s in the form of a chat-room on a blog post, so you can skip right by if you aren’t interested. Anyway, details to come. We start soon.
