A leading market indicator is showing strong signs of growth in the U.S. manufacturing sector. The Chicago Purchasing Managers Index, or PMI, measures national monthly growth in areas like production and new orders. This month’s index shows backlogs for orders are at their highest level since 1988.

Jim Nelson is a spokesman for the Illinois Manufacturing Association. He said the report shows a healthy increase in supply and demand. “Now that consumer confidence appears to be building again retailers are starting to order more product from manufacturers,” he said. ”Manufacturers are therefore responding by increasing production.” But Nelson said gains in production haven’t translated to more jobs in the sector. According to the Illinois Department of Employment Security the state has lost more than 200,000 manufacturing jobs in the last decade.
