Despite frigid temps this week, El Niño year could mean mild, dry Chicago winter

The snow and lows in the teens Chicago experienced after Thanksgiving could be an anomaly in what’s shaping up as a strong El Niño winter.

On average, Chicago has its first snowfall of more than 1” on December 7. This year, it came in November. However, climate experts and meteorologists say the early snow is likely not a harbinger of what’s to come.
