International art star and Chicagoan Theaster Gates’ new exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art called 13th ballad uses pews from the University of Chicago’s Bond Chapel, recently removed to give Muslims a place to pray, and found objects from the Huguenot House to examine religious tolerance and identity. Gates, the director of the Arts and Public Life Initiative at the University of Chicago, joins Niala to talk about his multidisciplinary body of work, his new arts incubator and his ambitions to use his work to rehabilitate depressed neighborhoods of Chicago, like his own Grand Crossing.
