Former Chicago mayor Jane Byrne passed away this morning at the age of 81. She was in the news recently when the City Council decided to rename the area around Chicago’s iconic Water Tower was named Jane M. Byrne Plaza. Byrne served as mayor from 1979 to 1983. In many ways she was a classic Chicago character, full of witty retorts and fiery rhetoric about fighting the Democratic machine, about how the political class and the press corps that reported on her was a boys’ club. She won the hearts of many Chicagoans, and infuriated others, but no one doubted her confidence, and how much she loved this city. We’re spending the next hour talking about Mayor Jane Byrne’s time in office, her legacy. We’ve got a great line up of politicians who worked with and tussled with her, reporters who covered her.
