Residents woke up to news today that 16th Ward Alderman JoAnn Thompson had died of heart failure Monday. The South Side alderman, whose ward includes portions of Back of the Yards, Englewood and West Englewood, is credited with bringing an annual music festival and a Whole Foods to Englewood. Thompson was supported by Mayor Rahm Emanuel as she sought a third term in City Council. So, what happens to the seat now until the election is over and the new City Council is sworn in in May? UIC professor and former alderman Dick Simpson tells us how this could play out.
