In recent decades, childhood food allergies have gone from from 1 in 50 American children 25 years ago to to 1 in 13 today. That comes to about two kids in every American classroom and that number is growing. At the public school level, some schools are going nut free. Many are stocking epinephrine “EpiPens” to be used on anyone with a severe allergic reaction. WBEZ’s Monica Eng has a story looking at where the diagnoses and special programs are being concentrated in Chicago Public Schools. She joins us along with Dr. Anne Marie Singh of Lurie Children’s Hospital, who answers questions about childhood food allergies. We also hear from Representative Will Guzzardi, who represents the 39th District in Logan Square, Belmont-Cragin, Portage Park.
