November’s Afternoon Shift Book Club selection is the critically acclaimed book, “The House on Mango Street,” by Sandra Cisneros. Told in a series of vignettes, it’s the story of Esperanza Cordero, a young Latina girl growing up in Chicago, inventing for herself who and what she will become. The book has been taught from inner-city grade schools to universities and has been translated globally. The House on Mango Street was the Spring 2009 “One Book, One Chicago” selection. Why does this book still resonate with so many almost 30 years after its release? Sandra Cisneros, author of “The House on Mango Street” joins us in studio as well as Vivian Garcia, an after-school Instructor for Enlace at Madero Middle School and one of her students, 7th-grader Brian Garcia.
