Back in July, we had a great one hour conversation about musician R Kelly playing Pitchfork. WBEZ’s Jim DeRogatis and his production team put together a week long exploration of issues involving R Kelly and allegations of sexual misconduct. Why was Pitchfork celebrating this particular artist? Flash forward to this week when R Kelly released a new record, “Black Panties.” The singer is back in the spotlight with the album and a few raunch national performances with Lady GaGa on Saturday Night Live and the American Music Awards. The Village Voice just published a Q and A with Jim about his stories and the response has been staggering. The Voice’s web traffic has been through the roof and since they linked back to our July coverage, our site has seen more traffic to that material than any other story in 2013. Yesterday, we had more traffic to Jim’s work than to our web stream and overall site combined. So is this the moment where people actually start talking about the RKelly story? In studio with us is WBEZ’s Jim DeRogatis, the Village Voice writer and Chicago journalist Jessica Hopper and Mikki Kendall, a Chicago journalist who writes for the Guardian, among other publications.
