Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Cook County Commissioner William Beavers, who faces tax evasion charges for allegedly using campaign money for personal use, in part to fund a gambling habit, and for failing to pay taxes on said moneys. Beavers is just one of several local black politicians, including Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, former Ald. Sandi Jackson, racked with legal troubles. Chicago Ald. Roderick Sawyer (6th), whose father, the Honorable Eugene Sawyer, was elected mayor by the City Council after the sudden death of Harold Washington, joins Afternoon Shift to ruminate on the state of Chicago’s African-American politicians.
