Confronting domestic violence can have special cultural, economic, and legal complications for women from immigrant communities. An immigrant woman may find that her only means of support is an abusive husband, as she lacks alternative support networks in her new country. An undocumented woman may not legally work, and may face a constant threat of deportation by her abuser. This year, the U.S. government will begin implementing its long awaited U Visa to grant legal status to immigrants who have been victims of crimes, such as domestic violence, and agree to cooperate with law enforcement.
