If you live in Chicago and you drive a car, you’ve probably been stuck in traffic on the Eisenhower Expressway. Oak Park resident Jillian Zarlenga sure has. “I spent a great deal of time on the Eisenhower inching towards the Harlem Avenue exit,” she says.

The Ike was the city’s first superhighway. Decades after its completion, people affected open up about how it scattered ethnic neighborhoods and changed many lives forever.

In this special Curious City presentation, reporter Robert Loerzel takes us through the construction of the expressway that reshaped the Chicago region.
