Poet Luis Rodriguez is an activist and artist who has a deep and long-standing love affair with words. It all began in a somewhat unlikely time and place – in jail, during his troubled teen years.
In the decades since, Rodriguez has become one of the most recognized Chicano writers in the country. His 1993 memoir Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. won him the Carl Sandburg Literary Award. He’s written numerous books and won plenty of awards since then.
But after launching his career in Chicago, he left more than a decade ago to resettle in LA. Now he’s back, at the invitation of Jane Addams Hull House Museum. They’ve commissioned a new poem by Rodriguez for their Alternative Labeling Project.
