Tonight, Nandi, Puerto Rico’s only all-women bomba ensemble, will heat up the Logan Square Auditorium for the annual Abolition of Slavery concert and fundraiser. They’ll take the stage with members from the Chicago-based bomba group Grupo Yuba. Bomba is both a song and dance that originated from African slaves working on Puerto Rico’s sugar plantations. Nandi, along with two members of Grupo Yuba help explain the musical tradition.  Oxil Febles is Nandi’s director.

Members of Nandi include Oxil Febles, Amarilys Rios, Raiza Cupid, Marien Torres, Lolivone Leon, Maritere Martinez, and Denise Solis.  Traci Garcia and Mirely Rodriguez from Grupo Yuba also joined us.
