Few people had as exciting – and troubled – a year as Roland Burris did. Illinois’ junior U.S. Senator began 2009 fighting for the seat handed to him by the state’s embattled governor, Rod Blagojevich. At the end of this week, Burris will celebrate a full year in the exclusive club. Burris’ rough time in the Senate didn’t end with his swearing-in. Controversies kept springing up over the following few months. But Burris hung around – resisting calls from Illinois’s governor and senior senator to resign. So, how’s that tenacity shaped his tenure and legacy? WBEZ’s political reporter Sam Hudzik tells us.
