The Illinois General Assembly recently approved a bill that would allow power companies to raise electricity rates. The legislation is backed by Commonwealth Edison. The utility argues that it needs the extra revenue to update an aging electrical grid.

This latest hike would be in addition to a separate rate increase that goes into effect on June 1. Despite legislative support in the House and Senate, not everyone is for the hike. One opponent is Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan who joined Eight Forty-Eight to share her concerns.

Eight Forty-Eight also hit the streets to hear from local residents about how they plan to keep cool during hot summer months.
