Herman Roberts is a classic American success story. Fusing an unlimited imagination, a strong work ethic, eternal optimism, and a kind soul, the 86-year-old entrepreneur is an icon in Chicago’s African American community. Roberts has been successful at just about everything he’s ever touched: from newspapers to taxi cabs, night clubs to bowling alleys, and hotels to oil wells. Even though he’s semi-retired, he still has deals in the works. And this month, Chicago State University is honoring the life and work of Herman Roberts with an exhibition of photos that span more than 50 years. We caught up with Roberts last week, and he told us where he got his drive to succeed.
