Cavalli Gets a James Bond Makeover

One of opera's oldest hits is getting a very modern spin - starting this weekend in Chicago. Francesco Cavalli's Giasone is rumored to have been the most popular opera of the 17th century. But in a new staging at Chicago Opera Theater, the production is blasting into the 21st century thanks to some trappings from a very resilient action hero. Yes, folks, that would be Bond. James Bond. If that combination has you scratching your head -- hold up! Director Justin Way recently stopped by and told us there's a perfectly simple connection between Bond and Giasone. During this conversation you heard Franco Fagioli as Jason, recorded at a recent Chicago Opera Theatre rehearsal. Elsewhere within the conversation, we played selections from a 1988 recording directed by Rene Jacobs.
