Attorneys asked federal judge James Zagel to throw out the conviction of William Cellini. The Springfield businessman was convicted just two weeks ago in connection with fundraising for former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Then, last week, the Chicago Tribune revealed that one of the jurors on the case lied about her own criminal history. Cellini’s defense attorneys said those lies polluted the first trial, making a new one necessary. They made that argument in a motion filed late Monday. WBEZ’s criminal and legal affairs reporter Robert Wildeboer joined Eight Forty-Eight to analyze the move.
