Earlier this week, 75 white firefighters settled their lawsuit against the city of Chicago over a 1986 lieutenant’s exam. The fire department promoted several African-American firefighters over their white counterparts, despite the latter group’s higher scores. The $6 million settlement will help close the Chicago case. DePaul University law professor Steven Greenberger explains origins and implications of these cases.
