The ’60s-era civil rights movement focused much of its energies on segregation in the South. But protestors encountered some of the more violent and public resistance to their cause in Chicago. In 1966, Dr. King and his family moved into a west side slum to spotlight inequities in housing and employment. But his time in Chicago is often overlooked – relegated to just a page or two in the history books. Then last year a group of activists announced plans for a historic district in honor of Dr. King and his time here. Today, those plans are underway. Housing reporter Dennis Rodkin is with us to talk more about the Martin Luther King Historic District. Rodkin writes the Deal Estate column for Chicago magazine.
