Elgin's ROPE program puts police officers on patrol where they live
Some local communities have gone as far as embedding their police officers into troubled neighborhoods in an effort to curb crime. Northwest suburban Elgin is one of those areas. In 1991, the local police department started the Resident Officer Program of Elgin, or ROPE. Today, five officers patrol the communities in which they live. In 2003, WBEZ’s Steve Edwards visited Officer Pete Almeida, now retired from the program. He gave us a peek into his daily work.
