The subjects of a new exhibition by painter Ann Ponce and her daughter, photographer Maria Ponce, are no doubt very familiar to the eyes of most Chicagoans. On TV/Off TV depicts local TV news anchors in an intimate, even revealing light. The portraits provide glimpses into their real-life personalities – the details that elude even the highest of high-def screens. Of course the Ponces have more access to these area celebrities than us regular Joes – coming, as they do, from a highly televisual family. Ann and Maria recently gave me a sneak peek of the portraits at the Packer Schopf Gallery in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood, where the show opens tomorrow. Ann started the tour by responding to some recent reaction to the images on media critic Robert Feder’s WBEZ blog.
