Joan Allen’s steady but sometimes under the radar career has made her one of the most respected actresses on both stage and screen. She has three Oscar nominations, including for her leading role in the political thriller The Contender. Before her film career Allen was known for her work on stage, where she mined a series of rich and diverse roles. Her life in theater has deep roots in Chicago. Allen is one of the original ensemble members of the famed Steppenwolf Theatre. She was recruited by one of Steppenwolf’s founding members, the actor John Malkovich. Now Steppenwolf is celebrating Allen’s contributions to the field. She will be honored today at Steppenwolf Salutes Women in the Arts. Allen talks to Alison Cuddy about her career on stage and screen.
