Fate works in mysterious ways. For local musician Brad Smith, it came in the form of an old high school buddy, Philip Sternberg. Sternberg came across a tape of Smith’s songs and thought they’d be perfect for a film his brother in law was making. That brother in law was Jason Reitman, and the film was Up in the Air. And now the man who likes to call himself Sad Brad Smith is a lot happier. His song “Help Yourself” underscores a pivotal moment in the Oscar-nominated film. Before he and the rest of the people involved in the movie watch the results this Sunday, Sad Brad Smith stopped by our studios to talk about his unexpected success.
