In a city filled with brilliant buildings made of glass, steel and stone, Louis Sullivan’s visionary work stands out as some of the greatest examples of architecture from the Gilded Age, or any age.

Growing up on a farm, young Sullivan became obsessed with two things: nature and the promise of America. He believed the country, its people, and its democracy to be wholly unique. Therefore, its art and architecture should be, as well. Those ideals weave their way through the documentary film Louis Sullivan: The Struggle For American Architecture.

Eight Forty-Eight’s Jason Marck talks with director Mark Richard Smith, who says he strove to capture the essence of Sullivan’s soul.
