Mar Caribe is a band whose name leads you slightly astray. Their name might literally translate to “Carribean Sea”, but their music has more of a folk, jam-band feel than a reggaeton one.

According to their website, Mar Caribe is “an instrumental band playing covers of movie themes, classical pieces, 60s ballads, surf, and cowboy songs, as well as original numbers drawn from those styles.” On Eight Forty-Eight this morning, they stuck to this trend, playing songs like a take on “Jai Ho” (apparently popular around these parts) and the theme from the movie 8 1/2

Mar Caribe performs at Lincoln Hall this Friday with JD McPherson. In the song below, Tom McGettrick plays banjo, but he showed us his pedal steel skills during the show as well. The rest of the band is Jeff Parker on Upright Bass, Brian Koehler on guitar, Steve Duncan on trombone, Greg Duncan on trumpet, Josh Bell on baritone, tenor, and soprano saxes and Evan Bivins on drums.
