Fifty years ago, hundreds of young Americans risked their lives to challenge Jim Crow travel laws of the South. Freedom Riders, a new documentary about the historic movement, premieres at the DuSable Museum of African American History on Saturday, April 9. Chicagoan Dan Stevens and a couple of his fellow riders will be there for a discussion after the screening.
WBEZ’s Richard Steele talked with Stevens about his experiences and the reasons why he became a freedom rider.
In May, WBEZ will present new literature and theater inspired by the Freedom Riders, as part of the Off-Air event series. Richard Steele will host the event at the DuSable Museum on May 7.
