Governor Pat Quinn passed a law that will apply increased fines, even criminal penalties, to employers guilty of wage theft. The new law also empowers the Illinois Department of Labor to go after deadbeat employers. The Department can launch class-action lawsuits against companies instead of just referring bilked workers to prosecutors. Bert Rodriguez, Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of Labor, discusses the impact of the legislation and the resources required to implement it successfully.
