Photographer Doug Ishar Captures the Scene at The Belmont Rocks
In the early ‘80s, The Belmont Rocks was a thriving gay scene on the lakefront in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. Doug Ischar, fresh in town to study photography, grabbed his camera and ended up capturing an era. Ischar, now an associate professor of photography at UIC, debuted the photos earlier this year at an exhibition entitled Marginal Waters. Eight Forty-Eight co-host Alison Cuddy toured the exhibition with Ischar. They started with an image that captures a relaxed day at the beach. That's photographer Doug Ishar on his photographs about The Belmont Rocks, a lakefront gathering for gay men in the 1980s.
